Decca Tree Recording

For those interested in recording techniques, after looking at set up time and venues for location recording and wanting to get a great recording, I have always looked at how I could use the system called the ‘Decca Tree’ A commercial system can cost an arm and a leg however, I have come up with what I think is an excellent alternative, with available parts that are light, strong enough to take microphones and cables. I will list the parts with photo’s later.

Traditionally, the microphones used  would have a polar pattern  of omnidirectional (pick up sounds all round) however, I would like to experiment with different patterns. My microphone locker matches my audio interface of eight inputs (reason being type of recording, set up time, making more locations available because of the smaller set up). I have three large diaphragm microphones, two with switchable  patterns, one fixed cardioid (large diaphragm being the norm for the tree).

So I want to experiment with two set at omnidirectional for the L/R part of the tree however, the centre being covered by the cardioid. That means I need some willing volunteers to allow me to record their orchestra, ensemble, wind or brass band and see what results are achieved.

If you are interested and would allow me to do this please contact me through the website or Facebook page, Bethany Records. We can arrange dates, time etc.

As promised parts list:

2 x 19mm, 1850mm wardrobe poles; 1 x 19mm 90 degree bracket for holding both poles; 1 x 19mm mount bracket for mounting onto the stand. Clamps used to hold the microphones, making the spacing easy and flexible. Cost you may ask? Approximately £50, saving £300 from what I have seen commercially available. (pictures to follow).
